5 Tips for Maintaining Your Wallcovering & Keeping It Looking New
Your wallcovering is an investment — protect it. From cleaning techniques to humidity control and touch-up tips, these five practices will keep your walls looking pristine for years.
Clean Gently & Promptly
The golden rule of wallcovering care is to act quickly when spills or marks occur — but always gently. For vinyl and vinyl-coated wallcoverings, use a damp soft cloth with a mild soap solution. Wipe in a gentle circular motion without scrubbing. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, or bleach-based cleaners unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer. For natural fiber wallcoverings like grasscloth, avoid water entirely — use a dry brush or low-suction vacuum attachment instead. Water will stain and distort natural fibers permanently.
Control Humidity & Ventilation
Excess humidity is one of the leading causes of wallcovering failure. In bathrooms, kitchens, and basements, moisture causes adhesive to fail, seams to lift, and mold to develop behind the wallcovering. Run exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking. In humid climates, a dehumidifier helps maintain stable conditions. If you notice condensation on your walls regularly, address the moisture source before installing or replacing wallcovering — otherwise the problem will repeat.
Protect Edges & High-Contact Areas
Wallcovering edges at door frames, light switches, and corners receive the most daily contact and show wear first. Install corner guards in high-traffic corridors to protect vulnerable edges. Consider a chair rail or wainscoting in dining rooms and hallways to protect the lower portion of walls from chair backs and foot traffic. In commercial environments, vinyl corner guards and wall protection systems are standard practice for extending wallcovering life.
Repair Seams & Small Tears Early
Small seam lifts or edge peeling should be addressed immediately before they spread. Use a seam repair adhesive (available at wallcovering supply stores) and a small artist's brush to carefully re-adhere lifted areas. Press firmly with a clean seam roller and wipe off any excess adhesive. Never use standard white glue or household adhesives — they can cause staining or won't hold long term. If you have leftover rolls from the original installation, keep them stored properly in a cool, dry place for future touch-ups and repairs.
Schedule Periodic Professional Inspections
In commercial environments especially, scheduling a periodic walkthrough with your installation professional helps identify small problems before they become expensive repairs. An experienced installer can spot early signs of adhesive failure, moisture infiltration, or substrate movement that an untrained eye would miss. For hotel properties, an annual wallcovering audit is a best practice that extends the refresh cycle and protects the capital investment of the original installation.
